We have experienced similar problems when a virus scanner would kick in while users would work in AREV.  Could it be the transaction tracking setting of the Novell network.  Does it need to be turned off, or can we change the settings?  Do we need to get specific patches to use AREV on a Novell network?  If yes, could you please indicate which ones?

You should also turn caching off on Win95 Workstations (yes, it's a drag, but the outcome is more painful), and remove or reduce the packet burst rate.
