the problem I am encountering is that the data length becomes proportional to the original size of that column (i.e., a 300 Width column allows a maximum of 51 characters while a 70 Width column allows a maximum of 12 characters).

Is this a bug, or is it supposed to be so?

There is no way to do this. Any given cell can hold up to 999 characters or less - depending on what value is entered in the data length field.

More than likely you read that setting the Row Limit to -1 will allow the edittable [u]as a whole[/u] to hold more than 64K of data. This will not help you regarding the cell limitations.

So then this is not a bug. However, Cameron Purdy wrote a [url=http://www.revelation.com/WebSite/knowledge.nsf/88e0581886ff6a0d8525651c004caecf/b781781b8cad53d68525632b0048f392?OpenDocument]Knowledge Base article[/url] for creating a workaround. It may not blend well with your application but it is worth looking over anyways.
