==== Why should I upgrade? (AREV Specific) ====

We are still on AREV 1.1 and we use the HR1 application. How easy is it to do the conversion to AREV3 and then to OI? What are the advantages of doing so? I am able to run the HR1 application from Win '95, if that is the main reason for converting to AREV3.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Migrating the ARev 1.1 version of HR1 to ARev 3 and OI is a very difficult if not impossible task as:
1) The ARev used by the HR products is not a standard version of ARev
2) Without the source code, many of the utilities and subroutines will
not and cannot be converted to work in ARev 3.
3) The MFSes (MMI.MFS, and SI.MFS) will not work under ARev 2.x+ because of extensions and changes to the MFS calls.
I believe Ceridian has an OI based version of the Repretoire and Ensemble products. Contact Ceridian as they have the migration tools to move your data and keep the functionality you are used to.

Ceridian has upgrade paths to HR-1 5.5, which is based on Arev 3.02 (+/- HR-1 addons, of course). Included is a replacement for MMI.MFS, AUDITLOG.MFS which can handle the new file names among other things.
I have not tried, nor do I care to, to upgrade to 3.12 to make it OI compatible, but I suspect it is well within the realm of possibilities. I don't know how OI would handle the audit groups, though, which, in 5.5 are handled by the dictionaries.

Hi Victor,
Did you go through the upgrade path? If you did how was it? Is it worth it? Or is it better to choose a new system altogether? Thanks for your response.

We went through the normal upgrade path (from HR-1 5.0 to 5.5). I have also been involved with the same upgrade elsewhere. I must say that I was impressed with how well the upgrade went. We did have a few problems, but nothing that was unexpected. Is it worth it? I don't know. If your goal is to be up on the latest release, then, yes, it was worth it. I don't know that we got any significant increased functionality, however. Index rebuild time was cut down. Also, the structure of the CHANGES records has been changed: multiple changes are now included in a single record. This makes generating files for ADP faster, but if you have any custom programming relating to the CHANGES file, these programs will have to be revisited.
EASYWRITER reports and other reports have all been combined into the REPORTS file. This works well on the whole, but some of them have select lists stored in the records. The new screens do not have a facility to provide for these select lists. The select lists still work, but there is no field at report design time anymore. This was fixed by painting the screen. There were a few more of this sort of issue. Unfortunately, I don't have them all tabulated somewhere.
