We always advise our users that both the application and data directories must have full access/read/write/delete etc permissions.

If not the thing just wont work.



Many users (especially those with large IT departments) dont like this very much.

What permissions can be set without causing problems, eg Delete.

The all networks driver allows you to set ReadOnly=1 in the revparam file.  I have used this to create demos that work on a CD.



In theory (translation -- 'I wouldn't do it') you could partition the dynamic and static components of your application into separate directories, move syslists local, set sort paths to local drives,  don't rebuild all indexes in a table,  etc.  Then set ReadOnly=1 on the static directories, limit users to read-only rights there.



I believe this approach would create more problems than it solves.
