Hullo,
Anybody thought of doing a program that outputs (reports) to an XML file, something that creates tags out of the field names and puts them before and after the reported data? I think the XML world is waiting for a good XML database management system, and AREV/Open Insight might be a good way to go. I can't think of a better way to created rules-based documents than from a DBMS. One problem I haven't figured out is how to show the hierarchical nature required in XML. In AREV, you can determine what fields are required and such, but can you specify subfields and subfields of subfields? It's been a long time since I worked with AREV (bought Open Insight but never was able to get it to work), but I would be willing to work on an XML project if someone has some ideas. bill_dubay@phoenix.com

XML - what's that? Is that like a really dirty adults-only licentious Lolita-style implementation of HTML? I can hardly wait! If you mean AREV-]HTML there's a routine in my column in an early (Vol 2 ?)Sprezzatura Electronic Bed-wetter issue.

XML (Extensible mark-up language) exists so we can argue about what sort of web document tags to define, then use. So it means that the stuff in a web page we don't see can be even more elaborate and confusing and non-standard than the stuff we do see. When Javascript and VBscript and JScript came out, there was much confusion, and difference among browsers. The result is that HTML page developers are forced to develop code to support multiple browsers. Will XML be another nail in the coffin of browser standardization? Should the focus be on web content, links and speed, rather than burning simplicity at the stake?
