==== What is currently the most stable environment? (AREV Specific) ====

We are running AREV 3.12, with Novell Intra Netware 4.11 server (with Raid 5 disk array). Running NLM (5.5 I hope). The system on stations differ.
(From DOS 6.0 on dedicated indexor, through Win 95, Win 98 to Win ME on my previous LapTop).
We have GFSs rarely, but system on stations often freezes.
My observation is that
1) Running a "PERFORM SELECT" on Win 98 I cannot start another DOS window.
2) First PDISK after booting a computer causes
"Program performs an Illegal instruction" Bill Gates message.
It seems to me, that these problems were not with Win 95.
Is it due to speeding up the CPU's or Win 98 is worse/less compatible.
On my current laptop, I let uninstall Win XP and install Win 98.
Was it good choice?
What should be done with Win 98 to have less trouble?
(I have disabled write behind caching at least on my computers).
What is the most preferable system for stations?

We have a very close clone of your system here with the exception of a dedicated indexer. Opinions:
1. Win 98 (SE, I hope) is much better than ME. Win95, if OSR2 is about as stable as Win98. I've not had a lot of luck running multiple MS-DOS programs with AREV running. Perhaps Steve Smith's CPU+ will help this. The problem simply lies with AREV's use of the timer for its keyboard input and background indexing, etc.
2) First PDISK after booting a computer causes
"Program performs an Illegal instruction" Bill Gates message.
Check your CONFIG.SYS for a FILES statement and whether EMS is enabled. PDISK is notorious for using up file handles. There used to be a program called MEMFIX floating around that was handy in cleaning up garbage in low memory before AREV got there. The downside involves starting AREV from a batch file. Also, you have to run MEMFIX before loading the NLM client on the workstation. I used to have PDISK errors, but haven't seen one in a long time.
In general, DOS programs are more sensitive to desktop configuration isssues than Windoze programs, particularly Client Software (Netware, especially) and patches / service packs. The NLM seems vulnerable in this respect. My take is that once the fiddle factor is over, it doesn't seem to cause any more problems until the next desktop is added with some other OS or combination of things (NT, Win2000, TCP/IP, etc.). Then it starts all over again.
Disabling write-behind caching is a must with NETWARE and desirable with the NPP driver too. Specifying the correct amount of EMS in the DOS session shortcut is necessary too. Specify 4096K bytes of EMS, Does NOT use HMA, no XMS. Starr the APP with an XM4096 switch too otherwise AREV will only get 2048 when it starts in a window with 4096 K. Otherwise, there's a lot of history about this in this area.

Win 98 should be the second edition.
Be certain to disable write-behind caching in the performance options tab in "My Computer"
1) Running a "PERFORM SELECT" on Win 98 I cannot start another DOS window.
Check that the shortcut properties do NOT specify "Exclusive in Foreground" and that the Idle sensitivity is about 80%
Check that your AREV is set to "Yield time to Windows"=Yes
2) First PDISK after booting a computer causes
Try increasing the file handles. We've seen this on a number of Win2K boxes where TCP/IP printers are connected.

Thanks Sprezz,
I have set Yield time to Windows, and Idle sensitivity.
Unfortunately, I cannot find the Exclusive in Foreground checkbox.
How can I found, whether Win 98 are second edition?
The only information I have is date 4.10.1998.
Can you navigate me more? Thanks

Right-click on your Windows desktop shortcut to AREV and select "Properties". Check the Misc Tab.

There are following sections in the rightmost 'page' of properties:
In our Win 98 ... Central Europe (Translated)
Foreground Mouse
Background EndUp
Idle sensitivity Other
Keyboard ShortCuts
Does it mean the only checkbox "Always Inhibit" in the Background section should be on?
Thanks
