==== AREV - printing to USB printer - standalone (AREV Specific) ====

Has anyone found a solution to printing from AREV to a standalone (non-network) USB printer? My client has been using PDISK to send formatted reports to files, then printing the files.
But now they want something special and I have to write some PCL into the program and I need the output go straight to the USB printer.
Previous discussions on this topic did not make me optimistic that this can be done! But if you have a solution, please let me know. If need be, I think I can switch the printer from USB to serial....

Claire,
You can still include PCL in a PDISK'd file, and then send it on the the printer. I do that all the time when printing to our LaserJet printers.
As for printing directly to a USB printer, I don't have a solution for that.

Interesting problem try the points in this thread

I just discovered something interesting:
I have been struggling with new USB printers and a requirement to do a "dir ] lpt1" which would prove DOS program printing.
I am "sharing with self" on Win2K so that I can do a "net use lpt1 \\computer\printer /Persistent:YES" as documented earlier on this thread.
Still no luck ... THEN: (drum roll) ....
(R) click on printer, go to Properties, go to advanced, go to Print processor, change data type=RAW" to "TEXT".
It works on an HP 3650 ($90 at RadShack)

Hi Roger,
So let me get this straight - if I can! You changed the properties on the printer from "raw" to text". But you must have assigned the printer to LPT1? Can you please tell me the whole sequence you perform in order to print from AREV to a USB printer?
Thanks!

I have never done this. I don't even have a USB printer to try this on.
Your mileage may vary. Driver on closed course and other appropriate disclaimers from one Arev user to another.
I think the other forum post says basically to do this:
1. From command line:
net use lpt1 \\computer\printer /Persistent:YES
(so I suppose this could be done in the batch file
which launches Arev)
2. And then in the printer properties set the data type to TEXT.
There is whole thread in that other forum to crawl through however.

Unfortunately, I tried going to the advanced printer properties and clicking on "Print Processor" and changing the options on the right side from "raw" to "text" and when I tried to "apply" the change I got a message saying "Printer settings could not be saved - operation could not be completed". I also tried changing the options on the left side of the "print processor" from "winprint" to "modiprint" and got the same message.
The port the printer is assigned to is "DOT4_001". Can't change that either - same message. Looks like this particular PC isn't going to allow me to make these changes!

thanks again for your response. This is not a network printer, but it is a shared printer, has a name, etc. Will try. What other forum are you talking about?
Thanks again

There is also DOSPRN. I have had some success using this and have had it fail also. YMMV Google for the website to D/L. It's a program that watches for a file to appear in a specific directory and then prints it to the windows printer you specify.

I found a link to this in the Novell knowledge base. Not sure if it works with Windows Network printers but the license is free:

Well, was I glad to find this! as one of our clients has just phoned with exactly the same problem - hoping that one of those links will solve his issue. This one will be a network printer but Curt's article seems to cover that.
