Revelation NLM

The Revelation NLM is the optimal solution for providing your Novell network-based application with greater stability and performance. Through its client/server-like communications strategy, the Revelation NLM offers you increased speed and greater protection from network errors that appear as Group Format Errors (GFEs) as well as network administrator utilities, and statistical information to monitor and enhance your application performance.

Prior to the Revelation NLM, all networked workstations shared the responsibility for updating files, coordinating user activities, and file maintenance, requiring all workstations to lock segments of the file. However, with the Revelation NLM, the Revelation application passes a request to the Revelation NLM which handles the numerous file interactions.  This significantly reduces any time window during which a network workstation error or user error can occur.  With the NLM, no file damage can occur because the server-resident NLM is the only process directly accessing the file at the time.

Some of the many benefits of the Revelation NLM include:

Novell-certified and guaranteed to run on NetWare servers from version 3.1x or greater.

Supports applications created with Advanced Revelation 2.03 or greater, OpenInsight for LANs 2.01 or greater, and OpenInsight for Workgroups 2.5 or greater.

Enhanced performance   30-50 percent in LAN environments to more than 100 percent in WAN operations (based on your traffic volumes).

Full Windows 95 and Windows 2000/NT client support for applications created with Advanced Revelation 2.03 or greater.

        File corruption (GFE) protection.

A /P LHIPXTSR switch - private mode - that enables developers to launch Advanced Revelation sessions under true multi-tasking operating systems.

A set of programs to retrieve statistics from the NLM on encountered problems, current users, locking information, and file-access statistics.

        Simplified, streamlined installation procedures.

        Complete documentation covering

Pre-install checklist for server and workstation

        NLM-specific error-messages

        Improved troubleshooting tips and techniques

Instruction on how to make the most of performance statistics

Removal of Bindery emulation requirements on NetWare 4.xnetworks.

Implementation of a REVPARMS file that provides guaranteed protection that only a Revelation-based server can access any linear hash files stored in a particular directory.
Revelation Windows 2000 Service

(formerly called the Revelation NT Service)

For Revelation developers who are using a Windows 2000 Server or the NT Server for their applications, the Revelation Windows 2000 Service provides the complete power and integrity for greatly improved application performance and stability found in our Revelation NLM.  The Windows 2000/NT Server uses Named Pipes for its communications between client and server, providing protocol independence among TCP/IP, NetBIOS, or IPX/SPX.

Earlier Revelation locking methods used a Byte Range Locking scheme that designates a single file as a Lock Table.  The Revelation Windows 2000 Service provides a central clearinghouse for all locks on the server   only the Windows 2000 Service can physically access the files, protecting them from accidental damage from the network, workstation, or the user.

The Revelation Windows 2000 Service is designed to take advantage of Microsoft Windows 2000/NT server-based networks in much the same manner as our popular Revelation NLM for NetWare networks.  It provides similar performance gains and advanced capabilities, including:

Compatibility with Advanced Revelation 2.03 or greater, OpenInsightFor LANs 2.01 or greater, and OpenInsight for Workgroups 2.5 or greater.

Enhanced performance on Windows 2000/NT networks   up to 30 percent greater over previous Byte Range DOS drivers.

        File corruption (GFE) protection.

Full transaction logging capabilities for system troubleshooting.

Utilization of Windows 2000/NT s native service management capabilities for setting up, starting, and stopping processes.

        Symmetrical Multi-Processor (SMP) aware.

Choice of protocols in any combination: TCP/IP, NetBIOS, IPX/SPX.

Implementation of a REVPARMS file that provides guaranteed protection that only a Revelation-based server can access any linear hash files stored in a particular directory.
