A beginner's question for you:
I need to do a programmatic "SELECT … WITH …", but I only know the field number, not the name. I know I can use F1, F2, F3, F4, F5 for the first five fields. Can I make my own F6, F7 etc? Do I just make new SYSDICT rows similar to F1-F5? Will they survive upgrades?
(Wouldn't it be useful if one could just do "SELECT … WITH FIELD 9=something'"?)
My current solution is to inspect the dictionary %FIELDS% row.
Thanks.

The first 20 fields used to be a common addition to DICT.VOC in AREV to enable any file to be reported sensibly from TCL without consulting the dictionary.
It sounds as if you are on the right track.

Eric,
Thanks.
Btw - are you really an emu? In case - can I ask forgiveness for eating ostrich at my wife's office party Saturday? Or is there some indulgence fund I can contribute to to ease my conscience?

Do lemons have feathers? (Then I think I've just squeezed your canary into my drink…)
Of course I'm an emu. Go ahead and eat as much ostrich (or moa or cassowary) as you like. Stupid mere wildebeests by comparison.
No penance necessary.

Wildebeasts my ass! You and I are going to have to settle this like men, or mammals, or aviators or jelly doughnuts or something.
I won't stand to be insulted like this, though generally I sit when I read these, so I won't sit to be insulted either. And to think after all these years, the give and take, the wild parties, the wife-swapping, finally, it all comes down to specieism.

That was not my wife - that was a bicycle.
