Win2000 Service Problems (Networking Products)

We are experiencing problems with the Win2000 Service. Randomly the service does not release locks that were established by workstations. The locks are being placed by different workstations to different files using different methods. I can recreate the exact problem but the same results occur, when trying to access a specific record it says that the record is locked.

I have even encountered a machine that put a lock on the record and could not release the lock. We have shut the machine down for many days, but the record still shows as being locked. I have had all users logout but the lock still existed. I looked at the server and it showed that there were not any named piped sessions with the server. I then tried to shut down the service but it failed to stop. The only option I had was to shut down the server and restart. The last option of rebooting the server released the locks. This has happened a number of times and now I am required to reboot the server every 1 - 2 weeks just to release all the erant locks.

Here is my configuration:

Win2000 server

Win2000 service

Advanced Revelation 3.12 (running the same serial number from two different locations on the server).

Win2000 Pro workstations

Win95 Pifs that has the expanded memory available.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

We have the exe located in two different directories but are using the same program, so it is the same serial number. We originally had two different servers running two different copies of ARev but when I collapsed down to one server and had two different serial numbers we encountered problems with the Win2000 service. As soon as I copied the one exe to the other location, everything worked fine.

Originally I was concerned with locking but the locks are held and managed by the service so that did not seem to be the problem.

Hi Bernhard

When my customer ported to windows NT and the TCP/IP linear Hash service, I only needed to install the hash service on the server once.

But I found that I had a live copy of arev.exe and a test copy of arev.exe and I needed to apply the NPP (network performance pack) update to each copy of arev.exe, separately. Same applied to the copies of OpenInsight, I needed to make sure each copy was using the right network service.

Installing the update against one arev.exe then copying that over the top of the other, would have a similar effect.

The install instructions are quite handy for this.

Scott, LMS.
