I have set EMM properties to 4096, etc. in the _default.pif but the the system will not load the expanded memory.
I have talked to Microsoft regarding the documented EMM command in the config.nt file (which also does not work), but they as yet are not able to tell me why this is an invalid command.
I also tried loading WIN98 and WINME with the same results (no EMM).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
This could be an issue with Dell and the actual machine hardware spec.
See this thread for a thread about a similar problem with a Compaq box.
This thread has information on the solution.

to access EMM memory on any windows platform you need a line in the config.sys file saying device=emm386.exe ram. You will also need a line loading himem before this line.
Besure to add the drive and directory structure to point to where the emm386.exe program is.
The only thing that might change is which config file you add the command to.
This should work regardless of the PC vendor. If you need a reference look on Microdoft's web in the MSDN archives. Search on EMM386.
We had a similar problem with EMM on Dell Dimension CPU's. We had to go back one revision level BIOS on the PC from A-09 to A-08. May want to contact Dell Tech Support. Hope this is helpful to you.

Paul,
If you check the threads posted you'll find that some vendors are shipping machines that will not allocate EMS memory no matter what settings are used. This isn't an MS problem, but an issue with the computer manufacturer.
