Colors randomly changing (AREV Specific)

I have an interesting issue that I've never seen before. We are using Ceridian's HR-1 v. 5.52, running on ARev 3.02.

Some of my users have reported that the color scheme will "change" on them. Instead of the standard blue window, yellow labels, and red data fields, the colors will change. At first I thought it was a network issue, but this is happening on multiple PC's. It's almost like the color clarity is being degraded. The red fields will go to a pink or fuchia like color. Once the scheme changes, then it is that way throughout the application.

If they log out of the application and back in, then the colors are correct again, at least for a while. There are no other defined environments that use the colors the users are reporting.

We are using Windows 95 desktops with the Novell 3.10 client, and we are using the NLM. I have verified all of their PIF settings, and everything is correct.

I am completely at a loss on this. If anyone has any ideas, or has seen this before, I would appreciate any pointers.

Oops. I meant to say that at first I thought it was a workstation issue, such as monitor or video card.

Sorry for the confusion.

Can't say I've ever heard of this one. I know there are some video problems when running under OS/2, but they've been taken care of. There are also some issues with you try and paint a screen when paint is active on a lower TCL level.

What are the settings on the PIF on the screen tab, Fast ROM emulation and Dynamic memory allocation? What ever they are, toggle them.

Does this happen windowed? full screen? both? neither?

One cause that can affect the video clarity is the seating of the video cables, or the video card itself. Usually the signal turns bluish when the video cable is not seated in the PC properly.

Another cause of red turning to fuschia is when the high-intensity bit of the video array is somehow being set. On early CGA displays this caused the *flashing* attribute. On EGA/VGA and later it caused a *bright* red colour attribute (eg. fuschia) to appear. Check the use of VIDEO.RW and also the setting of @AW/@MW/@PW etc. , and the use of certain video escape attribute values where these are performed within the application. The effect may disappear if you hit Alt-Enter while AREV has focus.

You've probably done so but…

Check that the proper drivers for the monitors and video cards are set as well as proper settings (refresh rate etc) for the monitor.

Check for screen savers, power savings mode and viruses.

Check for hardware conflicts or shared IRQ on the video card.

Any source of RF/EMF interference? Wireless networks, microwave welders, heavy machinery etc.

I had one user complaining the monitor image was wavering or flickering and when I looked it it they had a small desk fan sitting on top of the monitor and EMF from the motor was causing the screen to shimmy…
