Ok, it is time to ask for help. I'm trying to clean up some old AREV tables. Earlier I could highlight an unwanted column, hit delete, boink, all gone. The colums after the one would not be renumbered. Also, the "Insert Data Column" option on the edit menu was greyed. That was fine.
Suddenly, if I delete a column it re-numbers everything after the deleted column… a VERY undesireable effect in this case. The "Insert Data Column" option is no longer greyed and works as one would expect if you use it. It inserts and renumbers.
HOW did I invoke this mode, and HOW can I turn it off again. I've tried everything I can think of.
I can renumber the unwanted column to 400 ro some such thing and delete it off the end of the list, but this is very time consuming. Surely this is something incredibly simple I just cannot see.
Thanks for some help.
Jim
Jim,
What I do with columns I don't need any more is to rename them to UNUSED_n or VACANT_n or something where n is the position of the field. Is that good enough for you too?

Oystein,
I could do that, but I was trying to figure out what I did that put it into the automatic re-numbering mode and how to turn it off. Of course I could also just open the dictionary in AREV and make the changes, but I am trying to learn the OI tools. I suspect it has to do with some function key I pressed.

Oh, I see something. I have several tables that are copies of a large AREV table. I am trying to split it into parallel tables. One of the copies is in "insert/renumber" mode and another has "insert" greyed out. I wish I knew what makes them different. They are all exact copies of the same AREV parent table.
Surely somebody has been here before?
Jim
Ok, figured it out myself. For some reason the data portion of the table was not properly attached, so table builder was in "create" mode. Removed and re-added the table and now it is in "Alter" mode.
Works as designed.
Jim,
I must sound really stupid but I didn't remember there are two modes in Table Builder. For a long time now I have created and modified tables with a different tool.
