Just installed Netware Client 4.83 SP1 on a new Dell desktop. The resources on the server are seen, but no user, including Admin can execute AREV.EXE, yet it is possible to copy files from the network to a locak drive. Also, it is impossible to map a Netware drive successfully. Apparently the rights mask (as seen by the client is empty).
Anybody have any ideas or a place where I can find some information or assistance. Most appreciated.

Don,
Have you applied the varius patches / fixes incuding VIPX and othere related to mapping drives -
236779.exe
275832.exe
295137.exe
nt483pt2.zip
Richard ..
You're probably right. I received the shell on CD from Novell and contained SP-1 .. Thanks

One of the real strange things is that it only affects .EXE's. You can open a .TXT file (although you can't map the drive, so your suggestions about patches is probably on target). The other strange things is that the Login to the server doesn't produce an error, but the First Network Drive (F:) is not seen in Explorer. Also, although you can "see" the network and its drives, you can't Authenticate to SYS volume .. the error message is to the effect that the server cannot be attached. Very strange.

Novell has published about half dozen patches / fixes to the 4.8x shell since April 02. Interestingly the VIPX and other patch solved not only OI problems but also problems effecting other software on client's network. When all else fails, look for the patches.

Don,
In fact I was off the mark. The SP1 includes the various patches mentioned BUT, since SP1 release they had a further important patch that may effect mapping. Also I note that the VIPX is an earlier date and file size to that of the original VIPX that seemed to work… I wonder why.
Right now testing OIwg3.7 on Novell 4.2 NLM 1.5 + WinXP. Unfortunately it seems a DOG. – or should I say DIW (dead in water)- like ] x5 slower. Not sure why the various fixes had worked a treat with NLM 5 + Novell 5.
Cant see Novell or any one else putting much time into this problem as Novell 4.2 is out the back door.

This is very discouraging, indeed. Other workstations (98-SE, Win2K Pro, 95-OSR2) work just fine. I've used NT desktops in this environment at another site without problems (with or without the NLM). I've not had any problems with Netware 5, either .. just some shell issues that got straightened out easily.
I'm at a loss to tell my customer what to do. Thanks for your help, though.

We've been working with a site running OI 3.7.0 and Novell 4.11 with the NLM 1.5. We've now got it to the point where it runs, although quite a bit slower than other versions of Windows. It was running even slower, but installing Vipx fix and setting Ipx as the default protocol for the Novell client made it go about 3x as fast.
The problem may have a different solution for ARev, but the full list of things we changed were:
1. Made sure nwipxspx.dll and nwcalls.dll were in the Windows\system32 folder.
2. Set FILES=200 in the workstation's CONFIG.NT file
3. Uninstall the Microsoft Client.
4. Installed Novell client 4.83sp1.
5. Check autoexec.nt and ensure that the Microsoft Client has been removed. Remove these two lines if present:
\Windows\system32\nw16
\Windows\system32\vwipxspx
6. Force the workstation(s) frametypes in the NWLink IPX protocol settings to that used by the server.
7. In the Novell Client properties, set the Preferred Protocol to IPX.
8. Avoid using XP themes (although this did not make a difference in our case).
Hopefully one of these will help you.

Paul;
Look here
I know you are on Novell 4.xx - however NLM 5.5 may help.
Any questions please call us.

We had thought that the NLM 5.5 might make the difference, but were under the impression that this was not possible. The Network Support Matrix lists NLM 1.5 as the version to use with Novell 4.x, including for optimal performance.
Is it safe to run the NLM 5.5 on Novell 4.11? This is a site we installed earlier this year and we purchased NLM 1.5 based on the matrix. Should we have purchased NLM 5.5 instead?
Thanks for your help.
