We have a client with a Novell network or some 30 terminals using a mix of OI and ARev3.
We are interested in knowing why we should use an NLM. GFEs are rare and the speed could be worse.
Considering the price of NLMs we need good reasons why the client should pay a NLM. Can one NLM be used for both the OI and ARev3 systems which share the same data files?
Any information would be appreciated.
Peter -
The short answer to your question is that Advanced Revelation running under Windows 95/98/NT requires one of the Revelation Network Products in order to operate. We do not support Advanced Revelation running under these operating systems without a Network Product. In your case the best choice would be the Revelation NLM.
Beyond the Windows 95/98/NT issue, we highly recommend that users over a Novell Network use the Revelation NLM to protect their data against GFEs, in addition to increasing the spped of their application over the network. If your site has 30 users, I would imagine that you would benefit from a substancial speed increase when using the NLM.
In regards to your question of using one NLM for both Advanced Revelation and OpenInsight: if both applications are on a single server that is running the NLM, then both OpenInsight and Advanced Revelation will utilize that NLM. The NLM installation diskettes contain the client drivers for both Advanced Revelation and OpenInsight, so you will only need to purchase one NLM for both of your applications.

Thanks Chris,
At present OI is running at a reasonable speed and we have not had problems with GFEs, except when there are network hardware problems.
Hence we were interested in some quantitive figure on speed increase,
particularly considering the cost of the NLMs.
For example, 20% or 100% improvement.
Hello Peter,
In regards to the performance/speed improvements seen with the Revelation NLM, I would suggest that you take a look at some other items on our web site. From our home page, you will find a link to a document entitled "Benchmark Tests - Revelation Network Products". This will show you the results of some internal testing that we performed. Also, I would suggest taking a look in the "Product Info" section of our web site in which you can find more detailed on the Revelation Network Products.

Peter,
Sounds like you've got well trained users, that is, they don't three-key or turn off their machines while running the application. Otherwise I'd expect you to get GFE's more often without the NLM.
What OS are you using? What AREV/OI driver are you using?
BTW, if your network related GFE's are from workstations (i.e. NIC or cable problems) then the NLM will shield you from these problems affecting your tables as well.
