Chapter B 1 : Installing Advanced Revelation

Use this set of instructions when you are first loading Advanced Revelation onto your computer or network.

Before installing a full copy of Advanced Revelation make sure that your system is properly prepared.

To install Advanced Revelation successfully, you must have the following:

  • IBM PC, PC AT, PS/2, Compag, or 100 percent compatible. (For optimal processing speed, a PC AT or faster machine is strongly recommended.) If you are installing Advanced Revelation for OS/2, you must have an 80286 or 80386 workstation.
  • If you are installing Advanced Revelation for DOS on a network, you must have DOS Version 3.1 or higher. If you are installing Advanced Revelation for DOS as a single-user system, you must have DOS Version 2.11 or higher. If you are installing Advanced Revelation for OS/2, any version of the OS/2 operating system will suffice.
  • At least 640K RAM. If you use RAM-resident utilities such as “popup” notepads or communications or network programs, you may want to remove these before installing Advanced Revelation in order to free as much RAM as possible. If you are installing Advanced Revelation for OS/2, you must have the amount of RAM required by your version of OS/2 and your OS/2 configuration. For example, if your machine is running OS/2 Version 1.2, configured for both OS/2 and DOS applications, you need a minimum of 2.5MB of RAM. See your OS/2 documentation for more information.
  • At least 6-1/2 MB disk space on a hard disk. The disk space requirement is subject to change and may increase. The Installation program will let you know if there is not enough space available on your hard disk.
  • One 5-1/4" high density or one 3-1/2" drive.
  • Proper read/write rights to the target directory. This is particularly important if you are installing directly onto a network drive. Because Advanced Revelation creates its own subdirectories, be sure that you also have subdirectory creation (parental) rights.

Some disk caching utilities may interfere with installation. If you are using a disk caching utility:

1. Set write delay to 0 (zero).

2. Turn off caching for the diskette drive from which you are performing the upgrade.

For information on how to determine the amount of RAM and disk space you have available, or for information on your operating system or your network, consult the documentation that accompanies your computer or network.

Installing Advanced Revelation

Install the base set of Advanced Revelation files on your hard disk by following the steps below. Halt installation at any time by pressing [Esc] and selecting QUIT at the menu. This returns you to the operating system.

Before attempting an Advanced Revelation installation, back up the disks provided in the package. Use only backup copies of the disks when installing Advanced Revelation.

If you are installing Advanced Revelation for OS/2, the installation process automatically:

  • Creates a subdirectory for dynamic linking library (.DLL) files, and copies the Advanced Revelation .DLL files into that subdirectory.
  • Adds a pathname to the LIBPATH statement in your CONFIG.SYS file that identifies the location of the Advanced Revelation .DLL files. For example, assuming your .DLL files are stored in the subdirectory C:\AREV\DLL, the following string is appended to the LIBPATH statement:
    C:\AREV\DLL
  • Installs three .EXE files: AREV.EXE, AREVBUMP.EXE, and AREVSVCS.EXE.

Warning! Do not delete the files AREV.EXE or AREVSVCS.EXE or you will not be able to log onto Advanced Revelation. If you are operating on a single-user system, you may delete AREVBUMP.EXE, which is used in conjunction with a LAN Pack to convert Advanced Revelation to a multi-user system. However, if you delete AREV- BUMP.EXE and later decide to run Advanced Revelation on a network, you will have to copy the file back onto your system. For more information on dynamic linking libraries, see your OS/2 documentation.

To make a menu selection, use the arrow keys to highlight the option of your choice and press [Enter].

Step 1

Put the Advanced Revelation Install Disk into diskette drive A or drive B, enter that drive letter, and press [Enter]. For example, if you put the Install disk in drive A, enter:

A:

If you have booted from a floppy drive, you cannot install from that drive unless you set the COMSPEC to another drive. See the information on SET in your operating system documentation.

Step 2

At the operating system A> prompt (or its equivalent), enter:

INSTALL

and press [Enter]. A screen displays that summarizes the installation process.

Press [Enter] and the Installation screen displays.

Step 3

The cursor is at the Source path prompt, which designates the drive from which you are installing the software. You can change the default by typing over the information displayed.

To move to the next prompt, press [Enter] or the [ J ] key.

Step 4

The Destination path prompt identifies the target drive and the complete directory path where Advanced Revelation files will be installed. To change the default des- tination path, C:\AREV, type over the information displayed and press [Enter].

Step 5

Press [F9] to start the installation process, and follow the screen instructions. The installation process first checks the hard disk for available space. If your hard disk does not have sufficient free space, you can terminate the installation process by pressing [Esc] and selecting QUIT at the menu. If there are any files in the destination directory, you have three options:

  • C (Clear files) erases all files on the destination drive before copying files to that drive.
  • 0 (Overwrite) ignores the existing files and copies the new files to that drive. An existing file will be overwritten with a new file if they both have the same file name.
  • A (Abort) cancels the installation process and returns to the operating system prompt.

Enter C, O, or A, and press [Enter].

Step 6

Follow the screen instructions that tell you when to put in the next diskette. If you inadvertently insert a diskette out of sequence, a message prompts for the correct one.

When the base set of Advanced Revelation files have been copied to your hard disk, a message displays, and you are returned to the operating system. You can now install optional modules (Environmental Bonds, for example) by following the instructions in “Installing Optional Modules” in the chapter “Updating and Enhancing Your Advanced Revelation System”.

If you do not want to install optional modules at this time, your Advanced Revelation system is ready to use. For information about logging into Advanced Revelation, turn to the “Logging On” chapter in this section.
