Windows '95 and Frame types (Network Compatibility)

A common cause of NLM errors with Windows95 is an incorrect frame type.  Windows  95 defaults to Auto-Detect, which is recommend by Microsoft. This can cause problems for the workstations accessing the NLM running on a Novell server.  What causes the problem is that Windows seems to default to the wrong frame type.  When Win95 starts its networking,  it broadcasts a RIP request on each frame format.  Depending on the responses that it receives from routers, Windows will assign a 'default' frame type based on the most prevalent frame type used.  This may or may not be correct for your network and/or the server running the NLM, and this may cause connection errors with the NLM (the error that is most common is FS472  -Server Set Connection Error).

The fix for this type of problem is to specify the Frame type to the correct one for your server that is running the NLM   These are usually either 802.2 (Default for NetWare 3.12 and higher) or 802.3.
