we replaced our AREV database application with a competing program in 2000. The AREV program is now only used for historical queries. Unfortunately, the server on which it was installed has expired and I need to log in to the AREV database. The files were all copied and the executable starts, but I cannot get a LOGIN screen. it just opens the window and sits. the top of the window displays Inactive AREV.EXE

Can anyone suggest how I can regain access to the database?

OK, could be a number of factors.

First, you should open a Start-]Run-]CMD.EXE session under Windows on a workstation. Then at the DOS prompt change to the path AREV.EXE lives in. AREV.EXE should be around 90kb. You should check that the read-only attribute is not set on all files - in some cases restoring from CD archive leaves the files read-only.

Check too that the zero byte files are transferred too - there will usually be a couple. The DOS copy command doesn't do this, but AREV needs these files.

When you run AREV, no parameters, what do you now get? Is there CPU activity (Check using Windows TASK manager).

If the AREV system originally resided on a Novell network server then this could prevent login if you've moved to Windows servers subsequently.

Some more details would be useful regarding your environment and the results of the above test.
