Try the Reporter doc. It'll make things much clearer.

I'm serious. What is Revelation Reporter? I've been using AREV since MAy 1991 and we have a large application developed but are always running into problems geting reports formatted for special occasions or projects. If Revelation Reporter is not used with AREV, then I'm not interested, MOM, but if it is, I'd like to know more about it.

I'm surprised Revelation Software's crack sales staff didn't jump on the message originally. So, here goes…

The Revelation Reporter is a reporting tool that is currently bundled with OpenInsight for Workgroups. Here's the press release announcing it's shipment.

Basically, it's a graphical design tool that allows you to design reports against Linear Hash. The tool is banded and is designed for multi-pass sorting, embedded calculated fields, RBasic selection, font and colour selection, embedded images and other items you should expect in commercial reporting tools.

It used to be sold as a standalone product to do exactly what you wish to do. However, with the new reporting deployment scheme that Revelation has announced, this product seems to have been eliminated. Rumour has it that it's still sold as a standalone product, but there doesn't seem to be anything on Revelation's pages. Some distributors and other resellers still have some in stock.

It can indeed be used with Advanced Revelation files since OpenInsight shares it popular and versitile Linear Hash filing system. As with OpenInsight, it does require Advanced Revelation 3.1x as the base LH file structure. Changes to dictionary and indexes from ealier versions of Advanced Revelation make this a requirement. We can talk about the reasons for this at another time, if you're not familiar with them. In short, it's the same requirements that prevent full sharing between different versions of Advanced Revelation.

If you do a search through this site on Revelation Reporter or reporter, you'll find much more information.

From within OpenInsight, there is also the standard R/List reports you are used to (now called OpenList) along with an EasyWriter replacement, called the Report Builder, and a 3rd party reporting tool from the only company actively providing 3rd party OpenInsight add-ons, which modesty prevents from being named. However, I'm sure you'll easily be able to find information about the products and company.

I can't beleive I'm doing this. I've been doing it everywhere recently. I had a message display at a US user's site asking them to "please wait whilst" their report was processing.

Somehow, I'll find a way to blame this on Judie.
