'Attempt to Logon too many Users' annomoly (AREV Specific)

Several workstations in our office are receiving the 'Attempt to Logon too many users' message when trying to run AREV after having cold booted their machines. It actually flashes on the screen after the splash screen comes up and before they are asked for their password. Then it closes AREV and puts them back to their WIN95 or WIN98 desktop.
If they have not turned off their machine, they are able to log into AREV. I've verifyed that there is well below the maximum number of AREV users in the system. We are running NAV software and I am currently working with the network group to insure that the rev*.ov and rev*.lk files are being excluded from the network scan.
Besides there actually being too many users attempting to log into AREV (3.11), what could cause this message to come up?

There are articles on the RTI Knowledgebase and also on our website about this very problem.
I would encourage you, very strongly, to download the AREV 3.12 upgrade from the RTI Downloads section; 3.11 has a SELECT bug that may result in unreliable SELECTs.

Larry,
Thanks for your Knowledgebase tip. Found the answer I needed. I'm curious … I posted a question about losing the LHVERIFY function about two weeks ago and in your last response to me on that topic you also STRONGLY suggested that I upgrade AREV to versioin 3.12. Especially to fix a SELECT problem. Could you elaborate more or point me in a direction to researsh this further. We have not upgraded AREV for 7 years and 3 or more operating systems ago. The last upgrade was a quite a large project - going from 2.12 to 3.1 or 3.11. We have the same number of systems now, however, only myself to maintain them. Could the program $v21 have become corrupted? I could restore a copy of AREV and copy (cut and paste to a network file) the code from it to the online AREV system? Just a thought.
Thanks for your help!

There is a page under my FAQ section that covers the pre-3.12 SELECT problem; briefly, however, it is that in a SELECT (pre-3.12) you may, or may not, get all of the records you're trying to SELECT. You may also get the first 50 records appended to the end of your SELECT. This problem was acknowledged by RTI when I was a SYSOP on the CompuServe forum, so it is not imaginary. The problem most often evidences itself if you have a file with a key that is 4 parts or greater and 50K records or greater. Most often does not mean only.
The upgrade to 3.12 is very quick - just fixes. No conversion, no bruhaha. There simply is NO reason not to upgrade.

Try asking your network folks to monitor the active processes to see if your users are actually logging out properly. The users counter that Arev looks for may be correct if the do not properly log out of Arev.
How many users are you licensed for?
