we installed Microsoft's SMS. What used to be a 10-minute process is now taking almost an hour.

Has anybody encountered this? Any solutions and info on this would be greatly appreciated.

I have a situation which exactly parallels yours. The SMS client is a real dog because it eats about 30% of the desktop time in overhead. Make sure that you're not protocol-stacking. If the desktop loads more than one protocol (TCP/IP and IPX/SPX and NETBUI, for example), the performance will take a real nosedive. The other thing seems to be a similar problem to a Citrix WinFrame where a DOS-based task tends to consume a disproportionate amount of resources. My situation was solved, fortunately, by not loading multiple protocols.
