I'm running arev 3.1, and want to install the upgrade to 3.12. I've downloaded AR312UPD.ZIP but there's no instructions in it. I have 3 questions.

1. I want to install this because I heard it will allow me to set a "yield time to windows flag". Is that true?

2. How do you install it?

3. Can I expect any problems?

Unzip the contents and copy contents of each disk folder to a floppy (or you can unzip each of the disk folder directly to a separate floppy).

Put disk1 in floppy drive.

Make sure all ARev users are out of ARev.

Login in to AREV as user INSTALL (ie. AREV INSTALL /x /m4096)

Pick "Install/Upgrade" from menu. Feed floppies as requested.

After it's done, log out and back into INSTALL and run "Upgrade Application" from the menu. Do this for each application/account on your system.

"Yield time to Windows" settings will be under Hardware - Workstation settings.

If you receive an "invalid opcode 70" error, or similar, simply re-perform the installation a second time. This is the only potential glitch, and it has probably been fixed by now. Before upgrade, do three things - backup, backup and backup.

Apart from the "Yield time to Windows" feature, the release is far more stable, and the limitation on TCL command length has been lifted.

OK, I've successfully installed 3.12, and I've set "yield time to windows" to Yes. Thanks for your help everyone.

It had the immediate effect of dropping cpu usage from 100% to about 80%. This still seems a bit high for an application sitting there waiting for input. Is this all the improvement I can expect?

Regretfully without acquiring our CPUPLUS product, probably. Fine tuning may knock it down a bit more but to get down to the single figures you'll need CPUPLUS.

What exactly is CPUPLUS, and how does it work?

Incidentally, although the upgrade went without any problems (like the invalid opcode 70 error you mentioned), I doubt the upgrade has been fixed. All of the files in it are dated 1995.

CPU Plus is a plug in program for AREV that replaces certain system routines with ones that yield time to Windows in a more effective manner thus drastically reducing CPU usage. Details may be found at http://www.sprezzatura.com under Products and Services. You may get a time-expiring evaluation copy.

The files are dates March 12, 1995 since that was the date ARev 3.12 was released.
