We are in the process of converting a maintenance manager system called GP Mate, which was written in Advance Revelation, into MP2 which uses SQL Server as the back end. Has anyone done this before or have tools that would allow the conversion to go smoothly? Thanks.

Stacey,

"Smooth" is non-existent word when it comes to converting data from AREV (i.e. typically non-relational and non-normalized) into SQL (i.e. relational and normalized.) Nevertheless, there are tools and approaches which can make this as smooth as possible.

We've had a quite a bit of experience this year alone doing these kind of conversions. We could provide conversion services or sell you our toolset for doing this (which will provide you with a set of ASCII tables ready to import into SQL) or you could go it alone in pieces by using AREV's ASCII export facility.

The actual conversion of data files is very easy. Export to ascii. Import from ascii. Be very careful that the data files you are exporting from are similar to the files you are importing to.

It is extremely hard to split data from an exported file to more than one imported file. It is extremely hard to take data from an exported file and split it into many imported files.

Also if the exported file design is different from the imported file design, that also could cause very many difficulties. So, if at all possible, try very hard to have the exported files match perfectly the imported files.
