Not exactly a Revelation issue, but this is affecting my Revelation clients:

I have been told by my Novell reseller that I cannot purchase additional users for my clients running Novell (3.x or 4.x) who are not using the small business editions. What I am told is that they have to purchase a whole new Novell with the total number of users that is required…essentially wasting their original Novell.

The small business edition, however, does sell additional user licenses but you can't exceed 50 users. They would still need to discard their original Novell and buy this from scratch.

Is this true? I have several 5-user clients who are just now growing beyond this size. Do I have to tell them they need to purchase Novell all over again?

Any clarification or confirmation is greatly appreciated.

From about 1989 to 1996 Netware was sold as a server licence, with x users. If you wanted to increase the user count, you upgraded, and this involved quoting your server licence serial number. You were then effectivly sold a new package, with a discount to reflect about 65% of the purchase price of the old package. With the event of Netware 4, the licence policy changed, and you could add additional users, in the same way that you can add Revelation Lan packs (RTI were as usual ahead of the industry!).

I don't know if the old upgrade procedure is still available, but I have found in the past that the upgrade of Netware 2.0a to Netware 4 was possible, with a sensible allowance on the old licence. I bet you'll have to fight a bit to find a distributor who knows how to do an upgrade.

Ashley,

Thanks for that explanation. I've asked them to look closer and see if a discount can be acquired through the original license. They've been my provider for several years though and they really know their stuff. This has really surprised me.

Perhaps my UK distributor bends the rules.
