Easy answer - Use Win98
Other Things to try..
From recollection, I'm pretty sure you need at least Service Pack 1 for NW Client 4.83
Expanded Memory should be set to 4096 not Auto in pif.
When you say it "hangs in different ways", do you mean while in use, while idle, or while switched to a different application.
We've virtually dropped using Arev 3.12 with XP or 2000 and Novell. Loads of problems, not just hanging which miraculously disappear when you downgrade to Win98.

Some would recommend Files=250 in config.nt
Last time I had going smoothly it was 4.83 + SP2. Therafter falls apart. I think that the VIPX replacement was in the SP1 and or SP2.That is a must. If larger then blows up.

Enable screensaver on Windows shortcut
Enable background processes (disable suspend background processes) on Windows shortcut
Set idle sensitivity to about 70% on Windows shortcut
In AREV, enable Yield time to Windows
Operate AREV in full screen mode or reduce screen resolution.(less GUI pixels=less CPU).
AREVFIX.COM is also an option.
Tame will hang AREV when too many DOS interrupt 21s occur in succession, which is why CPUPLUS and AREV 3.12 work quite well in most cases. There have been issues with AREV 2.x and CPUPLUS in some cases.
Some extreme settings (AREV over Windows Telnet) require Tame, more for the Telnet than AREV itself.
But I'd lay odds that CPUPLUS for AREV 3.12 will solve most of your problems, especially if you are using standard AREV menus.

Thanks for the input Steve, I value your opinion highly as a AREV source. I guess I should also mention we are running Novell 3.12.
I have been told by AREV that the Novell is the problem and that we need to upgrade our Novell to make AREV work with Win2000.
I will give your suggestion a try but thought I should get your point of view on the Novell issue.

I just realized we are running AREV 3.111 not 3.12
