We are in the testing phase of moving from a Novell 3.11 platform running AREV 3.1 on WIN 95 workstations using Novell Client32 2.2 to a Novell 4.11 platform. No other changes are anticipated at this time. We are not currently running the Revelation NLM. Can I continue to run our AREV 3.1 apps without the NLM after the Novell 4.11 upgrade? Are there any issues which mandate the usage of the NLM on a Novell 4.11 platform? Anyone have experience with this or any insight into this situation? Thanks for any help.

How many (ARev) users are on the network?

Normally if you disable write-back caching on the Win95 workstations, have the Novell Client32 and use the program settings (PIF) as outlined in the ARev FAQ you should be okay.

Precautions:

1) Make sure that the ARev sessions run in the background.

2) Make sure to train the users to always log out of ARev normally before closing the session or shutting down Win95.

The NLM will normally give you better performance and less chance of data loss or corruption due to workstation crashes or reboots (a common occurance with Win95).

Warren,

We have WIN 95 workstations with about 100 users.

We have disabled the 'Write-behind cashing' on our machines. Is this the same thing as your reference to write-ahead cashing? If not, ???

Our users are very, very good about exiting AREV correctly.

We have the idle sensitivity set to the default and have not experienced any problmes with AREV locking up during idle and or minimized times.

We are running Novell Client32 2.2 and will not be going to a higher version due to the conflicts with AREV.

So . . . if I interpret you correctly, other than the issues that AREV files face concerning data corruption on our Novell 3.11 platform, we should be able to upgrade to Novell 4.11 without needing to install the NLM??????? Just gathering as much info as I can!

Thanks for your insights.

Marilyn
