AREV is an executable on the NT server. You need to purchase the NT Service separately and install it on the NT server.

Are NLM and/or NPP required or are they just for network performance?

First of all, the NLM is a high-performance network driver for Novell networks. The NPP is a generic driver that you can use on any network but it does not have performance or database protection advantages. The NT Service, however, is like the NLM but specifically for NT/2000 networks. It has two parts: 1.) the service itself which is installed on the NT/2000 server and 2.) the NPP which is installed in the application's primary folder. So, the NPP can be used all by itself as an all-purpose generic driver or it can be used as the client portion of the NT/2000 Service. The NPP sells separately for a smaller fee or it comes free with the NT/2000 Service.

AFAIK, it doesn't. OpenInsight, however, is supposed to work with UNC's with the latest version of the NT/2000 Service since it can use

pure TCP/IP.

Q. Ok, does arev run as a service on an NT server?

A. It runs as a service only if you mount it as a service (ie. a server-based process with no user interface). We've done this with our S/Web implementation but it does require some work.

Q. ie are NT services required?

A. We'd recommend using the NPP and NT service (aka Windows 2000 service) when mounting a multi-user AREV app on an NT server.

Q. Are NLM and/or NPP required or are they just for network performance?

A. NLM is used with Netware. By NPP we assume you mean NT service plus the NPP - both are required for reasonable file integrity and some performance improvements with AREV network-based applications that handle high volumes of transactions.

Q. And finally, how well, if at all, does Arev interact with UNC…

A. It doesn't recognize the UNC convention. We do have utilities for many Windows features under AREV, including long filename support, sockets handling, email, usernames, obtaining the Windows version, and many others. What were you trying to achieve?

Thanks for info. A user needed questionnaire filled out for thier IS to implement new network. They also will not support 16 bit apps, so that with no or limited UNC functionality are real stoppers from the get-go. They are moving to another software package anyway, so I really don't know why they are even pursuing this….oh well, thanks again.

It is our belief not validated empirically, that AREV should be able to use UNCs with the latest 2.1 driver.

Although my response is a bit late, the arev.exe cannot use UNC, but you may attach other data volumes using UNC.
