We currently have an OpenInsight application that we are deploying on a network where there are satellite offices physically located several miles away. The satellite offices are connected to the main network, where the OpenInsight server resides, via frame relay with a connection speed of 784k.

When we click on the application icon to run the OpenInsight application from the central office, where the server resides, the logon takes four-eight (4-8) seconds to bring up the initial screen/entry point. However, at the satellite office we map to the drive, the OI server at the central office, and run the OpenInsight application from the satellite office, connected via the frame relay, the logon takes over four (4) minutes to bring up the initial screen/entry point.

We have tried running the application via different connections, TCPIP only and with Named Pipes/TCPIP. The Named Pipes/TCPIP configuration seemed to perform the best.

We added additional parameters to our revparam file (ServerOnly=1, ReadOnly=0, Locks=1, FlushFileSizeUpdates=0, FlushAllUpdates=0, SelectCache=1, MaximumUsers=250, CacheFlushLocks=1, MaximumOpenLHFiles=192), but the additional parameters did not seem to help with performance. Consequently, we removed all the additional parameters except ServerOnly=true.

We also tried putting the executable and DLLs on the local machine in a local directory and pointed to the working directory on the server, where the database resides. That did not seem to help performance, either.

The following is the OpenInsight configuration/environment:

Server Configuration:

CPU: 733 MHz

Memory: 740 MG

Operating System: Windows 2000 Server, service pack 4.

A new server will be used in a week that will have:

CPU: 3 GHz

Memory: 2 GB

Operating System: Windows 2000 Server, service pack 4.

OpenInsight Information

Version: 7.1.1

Network: Universal Driver 3.0.0.3

Registry:

AnonymousUsernameà ServiceLogOn

NamedPipeNameà LHSRVC

TcpIpPortà Allocate

revparam:

ServerOnly=true

The Linear Hash service was installed and is running.

There is only one copy of the Service installed on the server.

The revparam file does not have an extension

The router is a Cisco 1751v, that supports VoIP, however, VoIP has not been deployed yet

Workstations are running Norton Anti-Virus

Workstations are running Webroot Spy-Sweeper

Workstation Configuration

CPU: 1 GHz

Memory: 256 MB

Operating System: Windows 2000 Professional

Our questions:

What do we need to do to optimize to further optimize the OpenInsight setup to run on a distributed network environment?

Is Frame Relay the issue and what impact should we expect when VoIP is implemented?

Is there some freeware software that can be recommended that can be used to test our network speed to see if the network is the issue?

Thanks for the help.
