One of our users were running a report which is built using a SELECT and a LIST statement. We encountered an Out of memory problem when generating a very large report.

We solved this problem by running the same report on a NT environment rather than a pure DOS environment. As this report is run only by one user, we know there is not going to be any locking problem.

Can anything be done to solve this out of memory problem in a DOS environment? As I understand it, there is a maximum limit that you can allocate in a DOS pc. So you will always encounter the out of memory problem if AREV is generating a very large report.

Most memory problems with AREV are resolved by configuring the PC correctly. Here are some tips:

- Minimize the number of TSR's and other programs from being loaded in memory before launching AREV

- Make sure EMM386.EXE is loaded without the NOEMS parameter (this prevents expanded memory)

- Run MEMMAKER to optimize your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT configurations

- Run AREV with the /X M4096 option to have expanded memory available. This is invaluable for reports and searches. Note: 4096 is the maximum you should ever allocate to AREV. Any more will cause corruption problems.

There are some more but these are the must have basics. So see what this does for you and let us know how it works.
