In Win98 is has been recommended that we flag "DISABLE WRITE BEHIND CACHING ON ALL DRIVES" (Control panel-] System-] Performance-] File System-] Trouble Shooting)

I do this on all systems attached to networks - Novell and NT

Is there a similar setting in XP Pro?

Is there the same potential problem in XP Pro?

As clients buy pre-loaded systems it seems that we have to get used to XP even if Win98 works so well.

I would appreciate some insight into this problem.

Thanks, Ted

Ted,

I've heard that only the 9x family of Windows versions (95/98/Me) has Write Behind Caching. I just did a web search, and the pages I found agree with that.

FWIW, i'd be anxious to move to XP. My machine now only needs rebooting after some software installs.

I've been using XP Pro for months now and notice no problems. I made no adjustments for "write-behind caching". ARev using "All Networks" drivers.

Write behind caching is loaded by default on an XP drive. You can disable it by going to the hard disk properties dialog. You can get to that from the computer management window from administrative tools. Go to storage, then disk management. From there, choose the local disks from the lower right hand section, right click on the disk then choose properties. You should find the option under the policies tab.

I'd be very surprised if all the lanman and rdr settings would not be applicable for XP as they are for all the other NT based operating systems.
