We've been running AREV 2.1 with 5 to 8 users for over 16 years. As hardware was upgraded Novell NetWare has been updated, but the basic AREV app has had had minor tweaks, but no major changes in sysprog files. As we moved from DOS to WIN there were minor issues with memory and indexing, but nothing that ever forced major changes to AREV 2.1

The hardware has to be updated for reliability and XP will be on the desktops. Will AREV run in WinXP without updating Novell. One networker I've spoken to said he successfully installed and ran AREV the WinXP network without Novell client.

Is this possible, if so, is it a viable solution.

Are you currently using the Revelation NLM? It sounds like you are already running Windows but that they will be upgraded to WinXP. What version of Windows are you currently running?

We have the Novell Netware running on Win95 and Win98. I couldn't get it to attach properly to Win2000 nor could the developer who setup, installed and babysat the original network on base 10 lines with 286's attached to a 386 for server in DOS environment. Laptops with the latet edition of Win95 didn't present too many problems except with print queues. We did most data entry with the desktops running WIN95 and Win98. Now we are pretty much forced to go WinXP on a new network.

I'm sure we are using a NLM because stations will lock records, but I thought that was a function of the AREV app.

I guess my main question is has anyone used a setup using XP networking itself to a dedicated indexer and server.

An issue you may run into is speed. I have another customer who is running AREV on XP/2000 with Novell 6.5 and the NLM and the Novell Client. It is incredibly slow…

I would recommend testing with one station first.

We tried an AREV app running in two XP boxes hooked up peer-to-peer, using the XP networking environment and everything seemed to run fine, but it was just two units by themselves. The application worked fine, but hasn't had a lot of testing.

We didn't use the Novell Netware, just the AREV. I am wondering if WinXP does get along with AREV working in background and if anyone has done this with stable results. We only did it for a few days and didn't give it a chance to blow up.

The issue is NOT does Arev 2.1 run nicely on WinXP - because as you found, its fine (But note need to turn off Write-back Cache).

The issue is the compatability of the Client Shell you need to load on WinXP to get connectivity with Novell 4.x. Some Client Shell's are OK, most are less satisfactory.

My recollection is that Novell 4.83 P2 is OK (I stand to be corrected). Needs to be applied having regard to potential issues in the config.nt file - this is doced on this forum.

Obviously Arev net drive in this environment will be determined by whether you are running the RevSoft NLM on the server - possible IPX driver - whereas in WinXP peer-to-peer it was probably bitwise / whatever. All this is documented in the knowledgebase.
