I am getting the same error as Jonathan Bird stated earlier (but nobody has replied yet)

I'm getting a FS445 message returned when doing a select on an indexed file. The message is: "IDX_SET function 4 returned error code -30720" "Fatal internal error"

Had one of my guys spend some time with this PC. It is definitely memory related, or more to the point Windows related.

We've got 2 PCs on a Windows '98 SE network. Almost the same spec PCs. The client server gives me the error, the client works fine.

Win'98 says it is providing EMS even though there is no EMM386 call in the config.sys. Regardless of whether the config.sys has the call we get the idx_set error.

If we totally disable the EMS then we don't get the idx_set error. Just not enough memory to run the reports.

If we shut Windows down and go to DOS and run Arev with EMS we don't get the error.

What we can't do is run Arev out of Windows with EMS and not get the idx_set error on this specific PC. PITA

Any bright ideas, I've run out.

My guess is that the Registry for the offending machine is totally FUBAR. You can try a "scorched earth" strategy:

1. Boot DOS 6.22 and trash the partition table on the fixed disk

2. Re-install Win98 from scratch

3. Before you do anything else, make sure that EMS is available to the MS-DOS prompt as a Windows Program Group. (CONFIG.SYS, etc.)

4. Re-install what was there from your original disks.

Oh, by the way, I'd back-up a lot of stuff on either a CD-ROM or a bunch of ZIP disks.

I've had to do this more than once on Win98 machines. It ain't a pretty sight, that's for sure!
