I've read various messages posted about Chinese character sets, but can't quite tell - is anyone successfully running OI (4.0.2) in Chinese? I'll be at a site shortly where chinese characters will need to be entered into our very-english-based system. Would sure appreciate a head's up from anyone with experience on this.

Hi Mike,

Version 4.1 due for release August should handle it fully.

We run a system in Korean windows, seems to work OK.

They enter Korean Chars into the system. You may however find a problem if you try to print using 4.02. We have written our own "OI" for a Korean and Chinese system.

I user to have a Chinese version of Windows on my laptop a while ago to ensure that it works for Hong Kong users.

There were a few problems, but nothing unsurmountable.

The biggest issue was DLL's but once over this it does run, and these were mainly the OIPI DLLs that caused the problems.

It has been a while but I recall having some problems with Anti-virus programs installed so be on the lookout for these if you have problems.

You may need to think about sortation, if you sort by text.

You cannot just sort by ASCII as each Chinese character takes 2 bytes.

Also, printing is an issue as each character is 2 bytes but print as one character, and these are fixed spacing, but generally users expect left to right printing as per English.

When running Chinese Windows you can turn on a little 'on screen' keyboard to allow you to compose the characters using the mouse.

On the menus and control labels it is important to use the Underscored ampersands. The standard Microsoft terms (eg File uses F) have underscores to let you use shortcuts, but in Chinese these are at the end in brackets, so you can drive the system even though you cannot read the words (unless you can read Chinese).

Thanks much for this very re-assuring update! There were a couple of postings regarding 'simplified' Chinese vs. 'traditional' Chinese. Do you recall which version you were using? Or does it matter?

I dont recall which one we used, my guess would be the simplified, but just a guess.

I doubt it matters much though.

One thing you will have great fun doing is installing it.

You really have to have a lucky guess at the various options that you are prompted for. I think I just took all the defaults.

When stuck, I took the laptop over to my local Chinese restaurant to ask them what it said…. they had a great laugh at our expense.

A digitial camera would be most useful here for you for this.

If really stuck you should re-install English windows on another PC at the same time to get an idea of what it is asking.

Colin, as a quick test I copied some characters from Simplified Chinese (via Charmap) and pasted them into OI… came in as question marks though. Next I copied them into Word and they came in O.K. Any further ideas?
