Trouble using Arev 3.12 under Windows XP Professional

I am trying to get Arev 3.12 to run under Windows XP Professional. It displays OK and looks great. I can usually do a few operations (including saving a record) but it soon freezes. It always freezes immediately when I try to exit Arev - even if I am using the "Install" account and try to Exit.

Expanded memory is allocated OK.

I am using the following commands in the Windows\System32\CONFIG.NT FILE:

dos=high, umb

device=%SystemRoot%\system32\himem.sys

files=200

buffers=30

Does anyone have a suggestion please?

PCs with fast processors often have elaborate BIOS setups. We've often disabled caching and other "speed-up" features to stabilize performance on some PCs.

Check the Misc Tab and the memory settings on the shortcut.

Enable only 4 MB of Expanded memory and call AREV.EXE with the /XM4096 switch. Set Environment size to 1024 and the rest of the memory settings to auto.

Enable background tasks (NOT exclusive in foreground) on the Misc tab and set idle sensitivity to around 80%. Disable power save features in the BIOS and in Windows. Enable the yield time to Windows feature from the AREV 3.12 SYSPROG account.

Thanks. I've tried all of this except "Enable the yield time to Windows feature from the AREV 3.12 SYSPROG account". I did not understand this part. Still not working.

Thanks, Doug

In Windows, check that "write-behind caching" and "synchronous buffer commit" is disabled in the "My Computer" proprties - Filing System optimizations.

In the operating system, check that there are no old *.PIF files. You might also try deleting the shortcut *.lnk and creating a new one on the desktop.

For DOS:

AREV SYSPROG /XM4096

Then in AREV, Hit F5 for TCL

RUNMENU APPCONFIG

Then from the menus select

Workstation

Workstation

Then set "Yield Time to Windows" to "Yes" and hit F9 to save.

Thanks for your help, but so far no luck. I was finally able to set "Yield Time to Windows" to "Yes" , but it took six tries - it kept freezing.

If I enter data into an Arev form, it will go well for a time, but then will suddenly freeze. I my even be able to save the new record sometimes. But, one thing that always causes it to freeze is when I attempt to Exit Arev (from any account).

We'd be attempting a reload of the operating system at this point, or else looking at arcane hardware and software settings, like

- is there an old copy of command.com in the AREV directory (restored from backup)?

- are you using drive compression?

- have you stopped every unneeded Windows program before running AREV?

- does any other Windows application hang?

- does any other DOS application hang?

- is the PC overclocked?

- does the RAM have enough wait states to cope with the processor speed?

- is the RAM composed of matched chips? Have you swapped it?

- has the system been cleared of viruses?

- is your virus scanner scanning *.OV files? (it shouldn't be)

- if you drop the processor speed (via motherboard jumpers) what happens?

- is there any error message?

If you can't START-]RUN-]COMMAND.COM (or CMD.EXE) and then run AREV.EXE SYSPROG from DOS for at least 5 minutes without hanging, then we'd start suspecting file corruption of some sort, or interference of one of the peripherals (video/mouse/CD) with

the memory under 640kB.

Thanks for all of your help. Arev is now working fine with XP - problem is, I do not know what the problem was. It suddenly started to work. I removed all of the changes that I had made, and it still works. Frustrating!

Now another question. I have a client with networked 3.12 running on NT 4.0, SP6a with Win98 SE workstations. They would like to buy a notebook for use on the network. Any notebook that I have found comes with Windows XP installed. Are there any problems with XP in this arrangement?

Thanks,

Doug

Most of the Sprezzatura Group have upgraded our laptops to XP. We have mostly Toshibas and Compaqs. For me, the 2000-]XP upgrade went smooth, though I did archive everything off and formatted the fixed disk.

I would at least make sure they come with XP Pro, not XP Home. You can't make the latter run the login script, so mapping drives, etc, is a pain to administer.
