I am trying to create a calculated column in a data object to give me a text list containing the values Left(FirstColumn, 8).

Every time I hit the Calculated Column button in the object's Add Columns window, ViP dumps out of memory completely. No warning whatsoever, it's just gone from the screen!! It doesn't ask if I want to save, or even give an error message.

Is this a bug that I am unaware of? Can I accomplish this feat in some other way?

Thanks in advance,

Ken Wachs

P.S. The desktop platform is NT Server 4.00.1381

I have no such trouble. I'm using ViP2.5 on NT4.0. I added a Calculated column with the Left(Region,1) formula with no trouble, and executed it.

Is your app or data object very complicated, or with lots of script?

The app I am trying this in has one window and two data objects. Not very complicated!

My version of ViP, however, is 2.0. Is it possible that you could try it in this version? Also, I will attempt to search your on-line knowledgebase for any clues.

Thanks,

Hello Ken,

ViP 2.0 and 2.1 are tested and supported to run on Win95 and WinNT3.51 platforms.

We have seen some issues when attempting to run Version 2.0 and 2.1 on NT4.0. In particular, is the issue when adding a calculated column, which generates a memory conflict.

In ViP 2.2 our developers have added code to test what version of NT is running and execute the new source accordingly.

This modification has resolved your issue and many others seen when running ViP on NT 4.0.

ViP 2.2 and ViP/DX 2.5 are certified and tested versions for that platform.

Therefore, if you are experiencing such behavior, I would first suggest that you purchase and install Version 2.5 if you are using a NT 4.0 Workstation.

Hope this helps,

I am developing under NT, and my users are all using Win95! Pretty convoluted. Unfortunately, as I am at the mercy of my client to provide my development environment, I doubt this will change soon.

I have found a workaround, however, which is simply the reworking of a script I found in the Revelation Knowledgebase. I am using the FillList subroutine replacement for ColumnContentsUnique, and parcing the text before it gets written to the list.

It seems to be working OK. We'll see. I am going to try to convince Gap to purchase the new ViP version, especially with the LotusSphere pricing in effect. Maybe I can get a new development machine, too!
