Today we discovered that the NT Service had been stopped for about a week. The result? GFE's galore. I know how to detect whether the NLM is running, and we do (the FFFFFFs) - but how can I detect programmatically if the NT Service is up? Can't we have a specific client version for the NTS which will prevent the engine from loading if the service is down? Trouble is, we get so used to the stability of our development and application systems when these services are installed, that we generally never bother with GFE checks, etc.

Nick,

Do you have the "Revparam" file in all of your directories and subdirectories containg linear hash files?
The revparam file is just a text file with out any exestensions which should have the statement "serveronly=1".
The purpose of this is so that only the server can access the linear hash files. If a workstation is trying to access these files you will get fs477 error and won't be able to login. This shoudl take care of your problem
