I've basically asked this question before and got some information but some of it I don't understand. I'm hoping someone can fill me in. Or tell me were I can find detailed instructions on how to set-up a dedicated indexer.

I've looked thru the titles of the Tech Bullitens (1 thru 111 and read a couple that looked promising without finding what I need) and did a search on this discussion area (and found a few more pieces to the puzzle). Also read thru the very brief section in the USER'S GUIDE that covers a custom workstation configuration.

I'm trying to put together all the information needed for one of our remote sites to set up a dedicated indexer. The person that will be doing the set-up has a passing familiarity with AREV. I'll still need to send them detailed step by step instructions. In looking at our dedicated indexer I've been able to find some of the things I've been told about and found some things that I can't figure out how they work.

Both here and our remote site are using AREV 3.12. In setting up a user account thru SYSPROG, I found RUNMENU (from TCL), OPTIONS, USER and how to setup the user name and application (no biggie there). How I was told to set-up the user by using MANAGEMENT, ENVIRONMENT, INDEXES, then a Shift-F1. This must be an AREV 1.16 or 2.12 command path because I can't find anything even resembling that. Is there anything else I need to know for just setting up the indexer account thru Sysprog?
Some of the information I've got to date is to set the enviorment delay before first index and time between indexes. I've found where to do that for the enviorment. I've got some contradictory information on how to set those two values for the dedicated indexer user. Some say that there are menus and screens you go thru to set those values, while others say to copy the AREVC.INI and give the new INI file the name of the dedicated indexer user name. This latter is not a problem but I haven't figured out how to modify the new INI file to contain the needed timing delays. As for the former, I can't seem to find where I would set those values.

In our dedicated indexer, we kick it off by starting a BAT file that calls the user account setup in SYSPROG. So the BAT file would have a line in it like "AREV INDEXER /X". This would log into the application, some how bypassing the password and kick off an INDEX_FLUSH. I have no idea how this all happens. I've followed things as far as I can without any luck.

In reading previous postings regarding dedicated indexing, there was a mention of a program that was in development that would shut down the indexing during the backup process. Did that ever come to completion? It was also mentioned that a little subroutine could be created and attached to the post index process to temporaily halt the indexing while the backup process runs so as not to have any files opened during backup. I can very easily do that programming myself but I'd like to find if there are any pitfalls for either of these processes?

Anything else you can tell me would be a big help.

Thank you for your time.

Mike,

This is the third time I've posted a response to your question! I've offered to send you easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions on setting up a dedicated indexing station. It would help to know where to send it! Either call me at (330)841-8348 - or E-Mail me at:
