We're working on a project where we have to import data from SQL Server to Arev 3.12. My question is whether it is worth using Arev's import utility or whether it would be easier/quicker to just write a program to accomplish this.

We haven't used the import utility much - personally not at all - and we are fairly experienced with Arev programming. So in part it depends on how much effort it will take to get up to speed with the import program versus how much code we don't have to write if we use it.

The data to be imported contains several multivalues, at this point I'm thinking the most expedient way to handle multivalues would be to create a single field on export (with VB .Net) and insert value marks in it to separate the values, then import it tab delimited (the data also contains commas, single and double quotes) with a program in Arev.

If anyone has had to deal with this type of thing and has tips or suggestions I would appreciate hearing about it.

Thanks in advance;

David Craig.

My take: If you want multivalues in your imported records, and you have the ability to delimit the exported data, then write your own import program.

Another option, if it's still available, is to use the SQL Server bond. Then you can access the SQL Server files directly from Arev.

Thank you both for your replies, I hadn't thought of the SQL Server bond and I'll do some research to see if it would be helpful.

It sounds like writing our own program is a reasonable approach, so unless we find the bond useful we'll probably go that route.
