I Purchased the NPP about 2 months ago and set up a Runtime with it prior to release at the customers site. As is normal with our procedures, we pre-test the software prior to installation of the Lan Packs etc.

I found that with the NPP loaded and no additional Lan Packs installed, the "Readl" and "Writeu" commands would fall over with record locking problems. Do these commands work with the new NPP (I even had the "Non Networking" chosen, and it still fell over).

Tested on two different Novell Servers (4.12 and 5.00)

Run out of Windows 95, 98 and DOS

NLM wasn't active on either server.

The site was to have a peer to peer Win95 connection

If I Changed Readl to Read and Writeu to write the system would work fine. Trouble is, I use Readl in lots of places and it would be a real PITA to go changing it.

From RevSoft's licensing page

The Revelation NLM and NT Service are licensed per server. The implementation and use of these products require the presence of properly licensed OpenInsight Server Deployment Packs for the correct number of concurrent users.

The license also explicitly states that you can't run single user runtimes on a network. (This is of course interesting in itself given the peer to peer nature of most workgroups). So whilst one could argue that these commands ought not to fall over on non-bumped copies you do appear to be suggesting an implementation model that RevSoft are unlikely to make a priority of fixing.

Andrew,

Its nice to see you have these wonderful RevTech statements at your fingertips.

Point is, I've been (mis)informed that the NPP is more or less just updated drivers for networks other than Netware and NT. I didn't expect it to cause this problem even when the network type was set to non-networking. I don't use peer to peer, so it makes it very difficult to test the NPP (and I didn't want to add the Lanpacks till I was sure everything was ok).

The question still remains - Am I safe to assume that Readl and writeu work on a Win'95/98 peer to peer network even though it falls over in single user or non-networking mode on a Novell network?

Hey, just call me "Mr Acquaviva's Poodle" . (ancient British political reference).

It would perhaps be more accurate to say that the NPP creates the entry level supported environment for AREV in the 32 bit networking world.

And in honesty yours is the first complaint of this sort I've seen so unless no-one else is using them you should be ok ;-).
