I have a customer who has upgraded from NT service 1.2 to 1.5 and says that the indexing is taking a lot longer. he wants to have the NT service downgraded. any ideas why it got slower? is this a good idea to downgrade? how do i downgrade?

Chris,

I doubt downgrading would do any good. If the client insists on downgrading his NT service, he can do so by:

   1. Stopping the service
   2. Running LHSRVC REMOVE from the \REVSOFT\NT Service x.x folder
   3. Installing his original 1.2 NT Service

When you say he is having speed problems, what sort of severity do you mean? I've had customers report Arev/OI load times of 3+ minutes. When it gets this bad, it's usually due to how the NT OS handles network connections, i.e. when the connections lose their "trust" status. At this point, NT performs authentification checks on durn near everything, and for some reason, the only way (that I'm aware of) to restore these connections to their formerly peaceful state of trustworthiness is to go through a rather well-ordered routine of rebooting that involves taking the server down. If you are getting really bad speed hits like I mentioned above, and I can post that here, otherwise, let me know some more details..

Not really adding anything helpful here, but….

Just wanted to say that we experienced the same sort of slowness and alost went back as well.

The "Initialize" portion of the application waswhat appeared to be affected. Before and after that everything was as fast or faster than Novell. Also, simple "Attach" commands could take 2-5 minutes.

We use Win95 clients, enthusiatically modified by our developpers. We also have a couple of different domains with different scripts and policies. Scott's note makes sense to me, but I'm willing to bet that the connections that get checked unnecessarily are in the Win95 box, and are not related to the server.

The speed problem is that an indexing that used to take 20 minutes now takes 6 hours. I have tried to reboot the server but that didn't help. The user thinks that it's some kinda record locking that is in NT Service 1.5 but isn't in 1.2 that slows things down.
