We wish to port our AREV application to OI. As I understand there is a steep learning curve going from AREV to OI I thought an intermediate step would be to build a VB front end and use some other VB backend tools to build our reports and graphs(pie charts and histograms etc). We have VB experience and we can hire additional VB expertise as required.

I would appreciate receiving any information on the fesibility of such an approach and hearing of the experience of developers who have implemented a VB/OI based system.

Thanks

Mark,

You do not really need an intermediate step (VB) before moving to OI.

Take a look at these links:

1 and 2.

I hope this will give you some idea.

Mark,

I don't know much about this, but I'll reply anyway:

You may use the REVCAPI interface. Search the lists for "REVCAPI".

OI is 16-bit, your VB probably 32-bit. Search the lists for "thunking".

The only person I do remember having used VB with OI is Tony Splaver. The installation program for his OIPI is written in VB. But I don't think the program does more than copy rows to various OI tables.

Thanks for the information Marina. One of major reasons for considering a VB front end is the availability of VB programmers. This is not the case with AREV and OI programmers. We have been delayed our conversion efforts due to the lack of trained resourses. It has also been our experience that after training a AREV/OI programmer we suffer the same problem as other develops - good staff move on.

Thanks for your reply. I'll follow up your suggestions and contact Tony Splaver for information on how he built his interface.

Accessing via VB is the same as accessing by Delphi et al and there was an article by Carl on this in one of the earlier SENLs… hang on… http://www.sprezzatura.com/v1i5.htm.

I followed your advice and download the papers prepared by OI developers. Following the ideas expressed by the first writer I defined an application, window and menu. Phase 6 page 3 the author instructs one to define a Quick event for a menu item. This I am unable to do as the Quick Event buttons are turned off for all menu items except for the predefined Exit menu item. What I am I doing wrong?

Your help will be greatly appreciated. Learning OI is not easy.

Thanks,

Mark
