1. Start Openinsight

2. Logon to any application (including SYSPROG)

3. Receive error message - FS in 'Application Manager' window.

How do I get rid of this, why is it happening? I have checked through previous discussions with no luck.

OK. First some details.

what version of OI ?

what workstation environment ?

any network products running ?

Has this just started happening or have you never been able to fire up this copy of OI.

Ussually the FS message has a number associated with it. Can you let us know the full error message description.

Tony

Tony,

We get the same problem at one of the sights we work at. There is no associated number with the error, just "FS". We are, however, able to press enter and go one without any problems. I assume this is the same proble Leigh is encountering.

Sometimes the message doesn't appear when we first launch the app. However, if we use the Application Manager to File-]Open another application (like SYSPROG) then this message appears. In either case, we can press enter and move on.

For us the environment is:

Win98 OS

Running OI 3.7 on the local machine

Using the NPP 1.5

Workstation is connected to a 30+ Win98 peer-to-peer network

Also connected to a Universe server

This would be some sort of error in the bootstrap process. It could be a GFE in SYSENV, SYSAPPS, SYSREPOS or any other set of files. Somehow you'll have to get a back-up or another system and verify all these files. Depending on where the error is, it could be possible to load the OENGINE.EXE and do some of this work through the ACCESS program.

Yes, Don Bakke is correct.

I am running OI 3.7 on Win95, which constantly crashes, 5 years old now. 32Mb RAM 1.2Gb HDD and only 166Mb HDD left. Should consider going to NT I know.

I can continue but it is embarrasing when demonstrating to a client who is about to spend thousands with me. No FS number, just FS.

I will attemp to check SYSENV, etc and see if problem exists there.

Thanks everyone.

The FS message appears on my Win98 Pentium II with a 10gb drive. It's been there thru several hardware and OS upgrades. Happens only when we use the App Manager to "log" to another application. We can press enter, say "ho hum," and move on. It doesn't seem to hurt anything.

Hi Don,

Not seen this (I use 95 but Tim has 98 and looking at Leigh's subsequent message it doesn't seem to be related to OS.)

What is the inheritance chain (ie application inheritence) and does it happen both File Open Application Sysprog and and also when in Sysprog trying to open another application or just one way ?

Also have you tried to save the database (in database manager I mean) before File Open.

Finally, do both applications use the same sortpath and default volumes. Try playing around with these (if you haven't already done so!).

Leigh,

When you see an "FS" error without a number, it means that someone has reported an error without reporting any error information. The most common cause is code that calls Set_FSError() without verifying that there is anything in @file.error. There are a couple of other cases though:

1) There were some problems in the Repository indexes that could produce an error (fail an operation such as a READ or WRITE) without setting @file.error, so I would suggest clearing and rebuilding the Repository indexes, then looking through the SYSREPOSIX keys to see if there is anything terribly unusual (not that index keys ever look usual ;-)

2) It is possible that the error is coming from a custom MFS; I have seen this happen where STATUS=0 is returned (failing the operation) but @file.error is not set.

3) It is possible that something is missing (was deleted or was not deployed if it is a deployed app) from the application, like a record in SYSENV or something like that which the system is looking for; unfortunately, the easiest way to solve problems like this is to install a clean copy of OpenInsight and app-backup the application into it.

If possible, I'd like to get a copy of your system in here so we could trace through and identify the problem, just in case it does not fall into the above (or if it does, just in case it might be system induced). Is that possible?

One more thing. In light of Cameron's info about MFS issues and as this appears to happen on more than one application is it possible that there is a corrupt quickdex on a common or system file. Perhaps something exceeding the 64k limit ?

Just a guess.

Tony.

Sorry Cameron

Yesterday I spent the morning doing an appbackup of the stuff I wanted, completely deleted \REVSOFT, loaded a clean version of 3.7, thank God for old backups, upgraded to 3.7.1 and loaded appbackup. Problem disappeared. Obviously there was a system table corrupted. I had rebuilt everything I could prior to this. The error occurred immediately after I opened an application, any one.

By the way, are you going to do something about edit tables, they are a horror. I am new to them an am not impressed with their flakiness.

The current project will require heavy use of edit tables for financial recording with eventual posting to the internet as HTML pages. More money for Revtech!!! and me :-)

Leigh,

Is there any particular problem that you are having with edit tables? I know they are not the easiest at first, but I haven't had real problems with them in some time.

I am experimenting, and when I just cruise around a five column ET, select a cell, make a change, exit the cell and the data disappears. Lines disappear too. Standard Windows Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V don't work, maybe I have to use the old Ctrl+F3 and Ctrl+F4, must look up the manual. ETs just seem to be questionable.
