I tracked it down to being workstation specific (I was able to rule out network connection problems by swapping workstations). I never determined actual cause of the problem - there was no indication that the network card was bad. I had them swap cards and reinstall NT which seemed to solve the problem.

Try running it on a different WS if at all possible.
