screen saver official or unofficial use of (AREV Specific)

I was wonder if there is a official or unofficial position on screen savers. One of my clients has been requested to install screen savers to protect the confidentiality of data. The request comes from their primary client's audit team.
thanks, Rich
P.S. Gfe's etc began to appear after the client conformed to the auditors request. I currently have the screen savers disabled (much better now)

It's not that hard to write an ARev screen saver that will do the same thing. This can be password protected, and thus lock out unauthorized users from the ARev app.

Rich ..
My experience is that many screen savers interfere drastically with AREV running in a Win-32 environment. Basically what seems to be the real problem is with background indexing (which lays on the timer). Most screen saver's live here and tend to minimize or suspend background activity. The common problems are locked records and GFE's. There used to be several AREV coded work-arounds that were available. Since I don't use them, I haven't got any. Sorry…

I just found a document in the knowledge base concerning arev settings and not to use a screen saver. It has revelations name on it so I will consider it official. hopefully so will the auditors

I'm not sure what document you were looking at, but the ARev FAQ shows you can use a screen saver.
We'd recommend the blank screen saver. We'd also recommend not using anything by AfterDark, if anyone still uses that.

I did a search on "SCREEN SAVER" in the knowledge base and found an item related to nlm and arev settings. note only one document was found
Also the client was blowing up daily when screen savers were in affect (gfe's, record locks, etc), they turned them off two weeks ago and have had not problems since

I think RTI was doing a little covering on that, and it would really only deal with the NLM.
Either way, the issue with the screen saver is more the ARev in the background and the amount of resources it has available to it. As long as ARev is still running at a decent clip, then background processes will not be a problem.
The problem with screen savers are they usually suck up all the resources. This would cause the LHIPXTSR to time out, and would cause GFEs.

I've never had problems with screen savers on both NT or Netware servers, include some real CPU crunchers like SETI@Home or UD's Cancer Research Tool. That doesn't mean I'll never *have* problems or others won't.
The important thing is to set the pif to allow the ARev session to run in the background. If this is not set you're almost sure to have problems when a screen saver is active.
