I'm using Ceridian's Ensemble (Arev 3.02). When I start the program it breaks on line 1182 during initialization processing. What is strange is I can restore my system from a backup and it works fine for a while. I then copy any changes I made since the back into the system. It works fine, I can login and out, but later on when I start the program again and it fails.

Any ideas why?

What is the system loading when it starts? What is happening during initialization processing? What does the system load into system/common variables?

It's on a standalone system running from a hard drive. Windows 95 (ver b).

I'm not sure how much experience you have but you may want to see what happens at login by loggin in as sysprog and checking to see what the start up command is. You describe making some changes to the application and these changes are causing problems. Can you restore the system and then see what has changed, as far as the login goes ? One more thing, when you log in and you see that the application is starting the look at the bottom and you'll see "initialization in progress". Hit the CTRL + Break. Then go to your TCL and see what was running. You should be able to edit the program and see what's going on.

If it's anything like our system, the EMP file may have too many fields. Perhaps the system is trying to rebuild %FIELDS% and is maxing out. We resolved this problem in two different ways on separate occasions:

1. Manually edit %FIELDS% (this is tricky, since it's a protected record)

2. Archive unused fields off somewhere

Or it could be because of something triggering an infinite loop. First thing that comes to mind is a buggy MFS. This comes to mind first because MFSs are programs which run at boot time.

Along this line, Quickdexing on the EMP file can cause this error too, especially if you have a lot of records or long record keys. Actually any file really.

Yeah, that's probably a bit more likely, too. About every 6 months or so we have a user accidentally install a quickdex on the EMP file while attempting to zoom a field. As you know, the zoom key is F3, while the quickdex installer is SF3 if memory serves. An honest mistake, but not one which will be repeated. No users have security to use DICT anymore. If they want to see a formula, they have to use BLIST.

I don't remember which version this started in, but I've seen really strange results if the @UNAUTHORIZED_ENTRIES@ record in SYSENV got too large.
