Running AREV 3.111 with NLM 5.1 (IPX only) Novell 5.x

Workstation Windows 7 with Novell Client (No IPX)

Obvious solution is upgrade(IP) but we are just wanting to test

Windows 7 at the moment, upgrade will be done in near furture.

Heard I can get a IPX driver from the web.

Has anyone made this work yet.

I think you are SOL. The only things I could find are a hack to Vista to add IPX and no one will say they got it to work under Windows 7.

FWIW I could not get ARev 3.12 to load under Win7 32 Pro with the UD 4.6. ARev 3.12 will load with the byte range locking driver. If you have 5 or less users that may be an option.

UD 3.0 might be an option. I couldn't tell you if ARev 3.12 with the UD 3.0 driver will run under Win7 though.

There's always XPMode or ARev32

Yes I am a little confused I must say. Or was.

Anyway I am still in the dark but I understand a bit more now.

Basicly I am understanding that I need to configure Win7 first into a virtual XP mode computer. Then try running AREV 3.111 on that.

Not sure if it will work or not yet.

I have one report from a tech saying it works with a DELL computer using 8G RAM but it is slow as a dog.

I have another tech saying that the WIN7 XP virtual mode will not work properly.

And another tech says he has WIN7 XP virtual mode working on a high end computer, but he is not running AREV so I still dont know yet.

Right now I am under the impression that AREV might work with an I-5 processor running at least 4G of RAM or higher, but still need to test.

Anyone got AREV working at all in XP Virtual ???

Terry,

Yes, we run AREV in XP Virtual Mode quite frequently we can't run AREV natively on our Windows 7 machines.

At Revelation Software the customers who have migrated from Arev 3.12 to AREV32 have been pleased with the results and there is almost no reason to continue maintaining a list of supported Arev environments.

Running Arev in virtual machines has past the stage of "it's stable and runs well" and is entering "it's obscure and difficult to troubleshoot". Issues interfacing with local hardware still remain a problem even in virtual environments.

Either way, moving to a dos virtual environment or Arev32 is going to require resources. My recommendation is to consider the resources and decide which path will result in the best outcome. Putting the resources towards a dos virtual environment may maintain the system, but putting the resources towards Arev32 may bring you further ahead in the long run.
