RevG Questions (AREV Specific)

Hi - Our company was looking at an investment package that turns out to be written in RevG. We are running ARev 3.12/OpenInsight, but I haven't had any personal experience with RevG.
- I assume our NLM will be of no benefit to RevG - according to the documentation ARev 2.03 or higher is needed. Is this correct?
- Will RevG run on Windows95 workstations, or would there be problems with this?
- Any other words of wisdom are welcome - this product is being looked at as a 'short term' solution (2 years) to a situation we are facing.
Thanks,
Jeff

I would see if it could be converted over to AREV 3.x. The underlying Rbasic code is virtually the same. The windows would have to repainted. If you think you have some problems finding people with AREV experiance now wait till you start dealing with REVG.
Good Luck,
Bob

I found RevG to be a well behaved stable DOS product
on a standalone DOS machine. As a non-networked
Win95 DOS application, you should have no problems.
I have no experience with networking RevG under Win95
but in theory it can be done using the techniques
for AREV under Win95.
Converting to AREV could be a major undertaking since
the menus, entry screens, popups, and programmed
I/O would all need rewriting.

People like myself with a good working knowledge of RevG are scarce, as you say. Generally methinks we are like the WWII vets. Old, and getting fewer very year. And just like the vets, darn proud of what we've done (bwg).

I agree with you Captain Kirk. I have seen many ingenious things done
with REVG2. But there will come a time when it is time to move on. As long as he has a migration plan and can get the G2 product supported then there should not be a major problem. But sooner or later they will have to go to something else.
By the way I started out on the G2 product. For the time it came out and comparing it to the competing products , Foxpro, Dbase, ETC… It was light years ahead of everything else. I just wish it,REV/AREV, caught on like everything else.

Go to the REV sub directory and TYPE the ROSMEDIA.MAP. You should be able to see a commonly occurring name, like SYPROG. Try each of these names with the password you have.

Aye Cap'tain, RevG is alive and well and in stable condition. I still develop solely in G and have not found a compelling reason to switch - yet.
G runs well as a DOS app in Win95. With the Network Bump disk, it seems to operate quite well in the Win95 MS LAN as long as you use a server. If the server needs to also be a workstation, I can send you a TSR that will allow the server's locks to be acknowledged. There are some considerations with this though but does seem to be working well in several applications (G and A). You will also need to learn about LNK files.
The Bump Disk (aka LAN PACK) can be ordered from a Rev reseller or distributor. It IS expensive. Retail price for the 5 user is somewhere around $1000 bucks. Sad. Considering I have a lost 4-user disk around here from way-back-when that I paid like $100 for. And you can't run without it! Sorry.
Much Luck

That's really cool! Expose a method to view passwords to anyone, including those who may have tight restrictions, by posting to a public forum instead of responding to a specific email address.

I sort of agree but relying on these passwords is a little flakey. I remember at one of the earlier PC shows we had over here when we were demming Rev E and a journalist came up and said "Let me try to hack this". He was in in ten seconds. "Oh yes, I always just look for small low numbered files" he explained…
