I have a client that is running Novell Netware and they are migrating the entire system to Win NT (I don't have any version numbers yet).

They have purchased the NLM, they have 20 licsensed users.

I don't know the first thing about Win NT - We use Win 95/98.

My question is this:

It appears from the threads here that we will need both the NPP and the NT service packs. Any advice or warnings as to how to proceed?

The client has informed me that they have tried to reinstall our software and they aren't able to get it to work.

I apologize for the lack of details - we are still trying to get info from the client (version #s, exact error msg, etc).

You will need the NT service. Included with it is the NPP, you do not need to buy the two sepreately.

Migrating from Netware to NT should be a matter of:

Installing Client services for Netware on one pc, and connect it to both servers.

Copy the application to and data to the new server

Installing the NT service and changing the network driver in the new copy

Checking it all works (LOCKING!!! PRINTING!)

Does your software make any calls to Netware utilities? (NPRINT, CAPTURE etc. If so all these will need to be changed prior to the switch.

Hope this helps,

JB

If they're migrating, do they HAVE to use the Netware AND the NT at the same time? If not, installing the Netware service on NT is about the worst thing you can do to NT. And, assuming they've got Client32 on the workstations, someone who really knows registry work will have to clean those up, otherwise the problems will never really end.

Once the Netware service is installed on NT, Microsoft's so-called uninstall routine was obviously written by someone not paying much attention (just like most other so-called 'uninstall' routines by any vendor - they can put the keys and files in, but they can't seem to track what they do, make backups of the files they replace, and check internal version numbers before trying to restore any files they HAVE saved off.) I have gone thru this with just one of my clients (they ignored my threats to firebomb them ), and they paid dearly, both in time lost to 'anomalies' in AREV, and in my time to fix them 1,300 miles away.

I could be wrong here, but I've yet to talk to an MS Solution Provider who wanted to deal with the Netware service extraction after a conversion. I prefer a backup, a reformat of the server, a clean install of NT and then a restore of the data. The client machines, preferably, would be backuped up, reformatted and re-installed, but realistically, they have enough software installed thru Windows that this just is workable. So, 'uninstalling' Client 32, then doing the real cleanup is the only answer I've found that works. Perhaps someone more knowledgable in AREV/Netware/NT than I (although I was distributing Netware version 4.61 on 6 360K floppies way back when) may have better solutions.
It's not a migration, it's a scene from Jurrasic Park where the velicoraptors (sp?) are after you.
I apologize about my 'attitude'; I had a client (new one) doubt what I had asked them to do, and I've spent a week cleaning up what their 'expert' did to the system. I don't mind getting paid, but I really get chapped having to do work that should never have had to be done in the first place, and I'm afraid I'm just taking it out on issues like this. Again, my apologies.
