While doing some overdue database housekeeping, I noticed that the SYSTEMP and application*LISTS files in my revboot volume are many megabytes in size and apparently filled mostly with ancient records.

Is there any systematic way of knowing which records I can safely delete? (i.e. the ones that have been collecting dust for years). What would be the consequences if I just did a CLEARTABLE on these files? Is it slowing anything down to just leave them as they are - unnecessarily large - filled with garbage?

It is 100% safe to clear SYSTEMP when you are the only user logged on. The risk with the LISTS file is that there may be saved lists used by your users. Additionally, saved queries, a la CTL-F10 from TCL, will be lost.

I have an MFS that you can put on the LISTS file that will track mod date, access date, etc. for LISTS records, in addition to maintaining information on the command used to create the list. It is really just a first pass at creating such an MFS. It's available for download from Compuserve or, I can email it to you (just send an email to me at lights@onr.com)

Just as an aside, Prime Information used to timedate stamp lists as a matter of course. I suppose UniVerse and perhaps UniData does this also (if running in the P/I mode). Then it was a matter of just running CLEANACCOUNT.
