I have a question about Arev version 3.12 and NT Server.

We are running Linear Hash on a Compaq 6500R server, with ArcServIT backup software (including OFA) and the standard compaq utilities.

We are running Linear Hash and AREV vs 3.12 and every once in a while the following problem occurs. The server service stops responding to any calls. I am unable to open any new AREV client sessions, and I can't browse the server on the network.

There are no error messages or events returned to NT event viewer.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can start to diagnose this problem? I do not know anything about AREV, but there are two AREV programmers who might be able to help.

Thanks

If this is just and Arev issue it may be that you have exceed the number of concurrent users. Can you see such as message on the client workstation? What happens if you try to log a client out of AREV?

But if you cannot browse the NT Server at all on the network then it looks like a networking issue. Can you Ping the box at this stage?

Tony,

There is no error message from the client. Except when they try and log in to the "network", they receive an error for the PIF file if it is an nt workstation. If the machine is a DOS machine the receive and invalid drive specification.

Yes, you can ping the server, but it will allow no incoming netbios traffic. For example, I cannot map a drive or browse the system using network neighborhood.

Its certainly a network issue then. Is it possible that the Shared folders have been set for a user limit. On the NT Server right click the shared folder, select Sharing and check the user connections is unlimited.

If this is not the issue think about setting up a HOSTS file on the workstations that resolve the IP address to the server name. This will be checked before DNS or WINS server in case the problem is there.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Tony,

The share limit is set to maximum allowed. Ping works but netbios calls do not. This saturday we had the problem repeat itself, but the problem corrected itself, in an hour and a half.

I will try the hosts and or lmhosts file and see if that corrects the problem. Our NT clients use dhcp and the WINS server information is passed to the client, however the DOS clients use DHCP, but I do not think they are passing the WINS information.

Any other suggestions?
